St. Paul Letter.
St. Paul, Jan 12, 1909.
Senator Cashman has also introduced his distance tariff bill, which is an exact copy of the law which has been in force in Iowa for the past twenty years and also a bill for joint freight rate, and at the option of shippers for continuous transportation without unloading over two or more lines.

It is well known that for some years past the railroad commission has had all to do in supervising steam railroads that it could handle.  It has even been intimated in some quarters that it has been unequal to the duties imposed on it.

St. Charles meeting to explain corn-hog plan held Saturday.  Farmers in the St. Charles territory will learn details of the Corn-hog reduction plan when they meet at Smith’s hall in St. Charles tomorrow afternoon.  County Agent Pederson and members of the county committee will be present to answer questions pertaining to the agreements; contracts will be given out; and farmers may sign them then if they so desire.
A similar meeting was held in Elba Wednesday and about 150 farmers attended.  It is predicted that 90 percent of the farmers in this territory will accept the plan.

Phone Co. places outdoor booths.  A welcome sight at many times – this is the outdoor Telephone Booth.
Whether it isfor the trucker to call his dispatcher regarding his next stop or a breakdown, a call for the highway patrol, a call home to say “We have been delayed, Don’t Worry!” or  “Lets call the Smiths and see if they are home; they serve the traveling and local public not only in an emergency but also for normal usage, 24 hours a day.

Now, an anti-audit petition circulates in St. Charles.  To audit or not to audit - that is the question St. Charlesites are asking each other these days and many don’t seem to know what the answer will be.
According to an irate Winona County Auditor, Catherine Sherwood, her office has received three petitions asking for an audit and one petition asking for their names taken off the other three.

Chief Deputy Ganrude takes a seat in the light.
This past Monday I sat down with Chief Deputy Ganrude at the Winona County Law Enforement Center, only six days after starting the position on January 4.  When asked if he was a little surprised he received the appointment, he looked up and plainly said, “Yes.”
Looking back on his career, however, his education and experience helped to make him the top candidate.
